Mont Fertile, 16 May 2025 — A memorable evening unfolded at the Marathi Oopkaree Sabha in Mont Fertile as friends, students, dignitaries, and admirers gathered to celebrate the official launch of AshokGowreea.com — the digital tribute to a man whose life has been dedicated to education, theatre, and social upliftment. The date, 16th May, was no coincidence — it marked the birthday of Mr. Ashok Gowreea’s late father, a man whose principles continue to inspire his legacy.

The event opened with a musical performance by Mr. Abhijeet Torul, guest singer and co-actor of Mr. Gowreea in a Hindi short film. He praised Mr Gowreea for his contribution in the field of education, theater and social work. He said, he was blessed for being co-actor in the short film “Karmaphal”, directed and produced by the Seetohul family.

As the Honorable Dhananjay Ramphul, Minister of Foreign Affairs, arrived, the program officially commenced with the National Anthem, setting a patriotic and dignified tone.

A Journey Through Service and Art

Mr. Rameshwar Maloo, Master of Ceremony, welcomed attendees and provided a comprehensive overview of Mr. Gowreea’s four-decade-long journey — from a passionate drama student to an influential educator, accomplished actor, and dedicated social worker. A photo presentation followed, showcasing key moments in Mr. Gowreea’s multifaceted career — a visual timeline of passion, resilience, and public service.

Voices of Gratitude and Inspiration

One of the most heartfelt testimonials came from Miss Dhanushree Bhekur, a participant in the latest 10-week theatre course conducted by Mr. Gowreea at the Rose Belle Youth Hub, under the Ministry of Youth and Sports. She described how the experience transformed her confidence and ignited her passion for drama. Her words echoed the sentiments of many young people whose lives have been touched by Mr. Gowreea’s mentorship.

Mr. Akshay Dev Gunnoo, former student and now a practicing priest and gondhli, shared how Mr. Gowreea not only encouraged him to pursue Marathi but also gave him his first opportunity on stage — a transformative moment that led to national recognition in the play Nat Samraat. He described his mentor as “Un homme du terrain” — a man grounded in the real needs of society, with a rare ability to influence lives both artistically and spiritually.

Mr. Manoj Piteea, President of Marathi Oopkaree Sabha Central Branch, acknowledged their shared beginnings in the theatre world of the 1980s. While Manoj chose the path of social work, Ashok, he said, continued to breathe life into plays with unwavering passion.

Mr. Balraj Narroo, President of the Mauritius Marathi Mandali Federation, congratulated Mr. Gowreea on both the launch of his website and his 40-year milestone in theatre. He urged the younger generation to follow in the footsteps of a man who has excelled in education, acting, and social service.

A Statesman's Tribute
Chief Guest Hon. Dhananjay Ramphul offered high praise for Mr. Gowreea’s
multidimensional contribution to society. He remarked that Mr. Gowreea not only
teaches but heals — using theatre as a tool to sensitize youth against social evils like
drug addiction. “Life is theatre,” he said, “and Ashok Gowreea plays his role with
brilliance, dignity, and responsibility.”
A Personal Reflection from the Man of the Hour
When Mr. Ashok Gowreea took the stage to deliver his speech, the atmosphere was
one of emotional resonance. He explained the deep personal significance of the date
chosen for the launch, paying tribute to his late father and acknowledging the guiding
influence of his family and his Guruji, late Daiwoojee Paddia.
He retraced the highlights of his career, including his first acting award in 1984 during
the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Mauritius, his acclaimed performance
as a mad man in 1988, and his sixth best actor award in 2019 for Ekaach Pyaala.
He reminded the audience that perseverance, belief in oneself, and passion are the
keys to success. He gave special thanks to his wife and children for their unwavering
support. With heartfelt emotion, he also acknowledged Mr. Koushaldev Ramkalawon
(Kamlesh), whose continued support over the past two years helped bring
AshokGowreea.com to life.
A Landmark Moment
As the evening came to a close, Mr. Gowreea reminded everyone that this was more
than just a website launch — it was a celebration of values, hard work, and the
transformative power of education and theatre. The ceremony not only honored the
legacy of one man but also ignited hope for many to come.
AshokGowreea.com is now live — a virtual archive, a teaching tool, and a celebration
of an extraordinary journey. It stands as a beacon for all those who believe in the power of purpose-driven living.

Written in honor of a man who educates through his actions, inspires through his art,
